Mysterious noises, aches, and ambiguous symptoms make diagnosing TMJ disorders a difficult task. Although millions of adults experience these symptoms, many become discouraged when they visit physicians and multiple specialists without receiving an accurate diagnosis. By the time they arrive at the office of Dr. Ryan Hussong and the Cornerstone Dental team, many have almost given up on finding treatment for TMJ disorders in Polk City, IA.
An Overview of the Temporomandibular Joint
The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ for short, connects your jawbone to your skull. The TMJ is unique among your other joints because it has the ability to move in several directions–up and down, from side to side, and forward and backward. These motions enable you to chew your food, yawn, and speak without interference. If you have a TMJ disorder, your jaw cannot perform these functions without discomfort, stiffness, or an audible cracking or popping sound.
Surprising Ways to Alleviate TMJ Pain
During your appointment with Dr. Hussong, he will examine your teeth and jaw to determine whether your pain is the result of a bad bite or misalignment. He may recommend restorative dentistry or an oral splint that will restore your jaw to its optimal position.
Like many of our patients, you may be surprised to discover the ways in which you can alleviate discomfort or even prevent a TMJ disorder outside of the dentist office. Dr. Hussong shares a few techniques:
- Ensure that your head and neck are in alignment by sleeping with a flat pillow rather than an overstuffed one.
- If one side of your jaw hurts, avoid sleeping with that side of your face on the pillow. Do not sleep on your stomach, where you are more likely to rest the painful side on the pillow.
- Work on perfecting your posture. People who slump or thrust their upper body forward interfere with the optimal alignment of the muscles and facial bones.
- Do not allow your jaw to rest on the palm of your hand, as this applies too much pressure to your TMJs.
