Do you have a toothache? Consult the following list from your Polk City general dentist, Dr. Ryan Hussong, to determine whether or not your toothache requires dental assistance.
Four Toothache Causes
- An irritant. Many toothaches are the result of an irritant, such as a food particle, caught between teeth. For this reason, it is a good idea to rinse your mouth with warm water and floss when you first develop a toothache. Doing so can relieve the pain or rule out an irritant as the cause of your toothache.
- Bruxism. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, puts teeth under significant strain. Accordingly, teeth sometimes develop sensitivities and aches. If you notice recurring pain in your teeth, especially in the mornings, bruxism may be the cause, and if you suspect bruxism, seek dental assistance. Without treatment, bruxism can rob teeth of their enamel and can even cause them to crack, chip, or break.
- A cracked tooth. Some toothaches may be the result of a cracked tooth. However, there are a few signs which may help you identify when a tooth is cracked. First, a cracked tooth is typically very sensitive to hot and cold foods. Second, a sharp pain typically results from biting. This pain occurs because the crack widens when it is compressed by the bite and then narrows rapidly when the pressure is released.
- Tooth decay. A toothache may also be the result of tooth decay. Some clues that tooth decay may be the culprit of your toothache include discoloration in the aching tooth and a toothache that tends to linger. Thus, if you notice a toothache that just won’t go away, you may benefit from seeking dental assistance.
