Must-Read Books for Your Child’s First Dentist Visit

kids-dentist-polk-cityChildren’s oral health has been linked to everything from academic performance to self-esteem, confirming what most parents already know—that the importance of excellent hygiene and regular to visit to our kids’ dentist in Polk City, IA simply cannot be overstated. Of course, not all young children appreciate the value of a teeth cleaning, and many feel anxious before their first appointment. The more you educate your child about the dentist, the more pleasant and productive his visit. Dr. Ryan Hussong of Cornerstone Dental Group shares his list of must-read children’s books about dentistry and dental checkups.

The popular Little Critter series by Mercer Mayer includes “Just Going to the Dentist,” a short tale in which Little Critter prepares for his first dentist visit. Once there, he learns that perhaps going to the dentist isn’t so bad, after all. Perfect for children who love animals, and easy enough to read for first- and second-graders.

In the Newberry-honored book “Dr. De Soto” by William Steig, a mouse-turned-dentist treats toothaches in his fellow creatures—at least the ones that don’t eat mice, anyways. When a fox turns up with a toothache, Dr. De Soto faces a dilemma. The series also includes “Dr. De Soto Goes to Africa” in which Dr. De Soto treats various safari dwellers. Steig also wrote the books on which the “Shrek” movies are based.

Taro Gomi’s “The Crocodile and the Dentist,” which is available in several languages, tells the story of two characters, each of which is afraid of the other. The book teaches children that things aren’t always what they seem, and that sometimes the scariest things can be anything but. Simple, colorful illustrations hold little ones’ attention.

“ABC Dentist: Healthy Teeth From A to Z” by Harriet Ziefert is perfect for older children. The book, which features illustrations by Liz Murphy, offers a more in-depth look at dentistry, including gum health, dentist offices, dental equipment, and more.
