Whether acting onstage or in front of a camera, some actors and actresses go to great lengths to deliver realistic, compelling performances. When Charlize Theron wore yellow and brown dental prosthetics to portray Aileen Wuornos in Monster, dentists couldn’t believe their eyes. Then there’s Jamie Foxx, an award-winning actor who sabotaged his own smile to play the role of a homeless man in The Soloist. Foxx, who describes his teeth as “so big and white,” immersed himself so deeply in his character that he had his dentist chisel his front tooth and make his other teeth appear crooked.
At the Polk City, IA general dentist office of Dr. Ryan Hussong, we’re equally passionate about the art and science of dentistry. We admire Mr. Foxx’s dedication to his craft, but we certainly don’t plan on adding chiseling to our menu of services anytime soon. If you’ve accidentally chipped or cracked a tooth, we’re more than happy to help. Dental bonding is one of our most versatile treatments, having both cosmetic and restorative functions.
What Is Dental Bonding?
The bonding procedure uses a special composite resin to provide structure to teeth that have been chipped or cracked by injury or teeth grinding. To prepare the tooth for bonding, we create a textured surface that firmly grips the composite. We then apply a thin layer of tooth-colored, liquid resin to the tooth before using a special light to cure and harden the resin. The process is repeated until the desired thickness is achieved. At this point, we carefully polish and shape the composite.
What Are the Benefits of Dental Bonding?
We also use it for patients whose teeth are badly stained and cannot be lightened using traditional whitening methods. The composite resin, which we also use to fill cavities, can be custom-colored to blend in with your natural tooth color. Bonding is an economical alternative to porcelain veneers, although veneers last longer. However, patients who practice excellent hygiene will enjoy the benefits of bonding for many years to come. Unlike veneers, bonding procedures require only one visit to our office.
