You are in good company if you get anxious thinking about your dentist appointment. Many Americans have a genuine fear and anxiety of visiting the dentist. There is even such a thing as dentophobia, the fear of the dentist. This fear and anxiety keeps people from regularly visiting their dentist, which keeps them from receiving important preventative care. Because of this, dental anxiety actually increases the risk of developing oral health problems. The longer someone waits to go to the dentist, the longer a problem can be exacerbated. Something that could have been an easy treatment if caught early can become something that requires significant care. (more…)

Traditional dentures provide numerous fundamental benefits such as eating, speaking, and smiling to those that have lost teeth. However, the most common complaint of traditional dentures is that they become loose or shift. Implant-supported dentures alleviate this problem by anchoring to two or more dental implants in a patient’s upper or lower jaw.
1) Patients with implant-supported dentures can eat foods that were once impossible to chew. Compared to natural teeth, traditional dentures are only about 15% as efficient when it comes to chewing ability. Implant-supported dentures allow patients to keep their normal diets.
2) Pressure from a traditional denture can create more recession along the gums and lead to bone loss. Implant-supported dentures, like natural teeth, conserve the jawbone and reduce bone loss.
3) Implant-supported dentures also reduce facial contour changes and loss of muscle tone when a patient has no teeth. Rotation of the chin, progressive vertical bone loss, and deterioration of the bite relationship can all be minimized with implant-supported dentures.
4) Since the new dentures snap or clip in place, adhesives are no longer necessary.
5) Most importantly, patients will no longer have to worry about dentures becoming loose and will be able to smile confidently again!
Implants made from titanium screws are placed in the jawbone where more bone is available for the implants to integrate. The front jaw is usually ideal since bone loss is more prevalent in the back of the jaw, especially if teeth have been missing for some time. The front jaw also has fewer nerves and other structures that could potentially interfere with the placement of the implants. Once complete, Dr. Hussong will fit special dentures that either clip or snap onto the implants for a secure placement.
